The dim light of lantern£ó and candle£ó is rather graceful and comfortable. Designed around the concept ¡Èplaying with the light¡É, his lamps have been used not only as a light source but also for creating unique spaces. Furthermore, most of his lamps are produced through Japanese traditional handicraft. His masterpiece ¡ÈWappa Shade¡É adopts the techniques of Akita Prefecture¡Çs ¡ÈMage Wappa (Bent-woodware)¡É a remnant from the Edo period. He created the lamp after mastering the essential techniques under the tutelage of the skilled artisan of Akita. He said, ¡ÈI want to know, and want more people to know, that there are things we pride. I want people more to feel the importance of maintaining their tradition.¡É His lamps are highly esteemed abroad as well for their mid-1950s Japanese aesthetic. .

Toshiyuki Tani : Lighting Designer
Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1974, he later established his design team ¡Èair-com¡É after graduating from Kobe Design University in 1997. He established his own studio ¡ÈMODERN¡É in 1999, and exhibited his masterpiece ¡ÈWappa Shade¡É as a designer of ¡ÈSPUTNIK¡É produced by IDEE in 2000. Additionally, he was an invitation artist of ¡ÈDesign 21¡É in New York presented by UNESCO in 2001. He has since refashioned himself as lighting designer, Toshiyuki Tani, and not as a designer of studio ¡ÈMODERN.¡É His lamps have been exhibited in Omotesando Hills in Tokyo, and overseas including Canada, Los Angels, Hong Kong and Denmark.
