Papermaking in Kochi dates back over 1,000 years. Tosa-Washi is well known not only in Japan but
also abroad, which includes the thinnest paper in the world "Tengujyo-shi" and "Seicho-shi"
used for calligraphy. During the Heian period (eighth - twelfth century), Tosa was mentioned as
a country producing paper in a famous historical book. Tsurayuki Kino, the author of Tosa Nikki
(Tosa Diary) who was sent to Tosa as an official, promoted papermaking, helping to promote the
cultural development of the province.
In Kochi Prefecture, where its weather is warm with plenty of rainfall, 55% of the raw materials for
Washi paper are cultivated and delivered all over Japan.
