■Who’s making our wrapping paper?
MORISA Co.,Ltd. :
Established in Tosa, Kochi Prefecture in 1986. MORISA has produced many kinds of paper
products made from fine quality Tosa-Washi, which is a type of Japanese fine paper.
Niyodo river is flowing from Mt. Ishizuchi which is the highest mountain in Shikoku.
As plenty of water runs at a burst for 100 kilometers, the current has enormous power
to cleanse the river. That’s why the visibility of Niyodo river is much clearer than
Shimanto river.
The undercurrent of Niyodo river flows on several meters underground of the head
office of MORISA. With the great blessing of an abundant and clear water source,
they can keep creating beautiful paper.
Tosa-Washi :
Papermaking in Kochi dates back over 1,000 years. Tosa-Washi is well known not only in Japan but
also abroad, which includes the thinnest paper in the world "Tengujyo-shi" and "Seicho-shi"
used for calligraphy. During the Heian period (eighth - twelfth century), Tosa was mentioned as
a country producing paper in a famous historical book. Tsurayuki Kino, the author of Tosa Nikki
(Tosa Diary) who was sent to Tosa as an official, promoted papermaking, helping to promote the
cultural development of the province.
In Kochi Prefecture, where its weather is warm with plenty of rainfall, 55% of the raw materials for
Washi paper are cultivated and delivered all over Japan.
